Go Green!

As soon as the wallpaper and carpets were out, we decided to start transforming the rest of the kitchen. New cabinets and counter tops weren't in the budget, and they say paint is the cheapest way to make the biggest impact (I'm not sure who says it or if that's really what they say, but let's go with it!), so we decided to paint the cabinets and update the hardware.

We got the idea to go with a shade of army green. Our counter tops are white tile with a brown wood trim, so we wanted something that coordinated without looking too matchy matchy (not a word). We chose about 8 paint cards from home depot, then compared them to a green cabinet in the store and settled on "Desert Shadows," made by Behr. We had heard that Benjamin Moore paint was "bulletproof" and that it's worth the added cost, so we found a similar color at Ace called "Stampede." We chose the Regal Select because it has primer mixed in...

Bill started by taking all the cabinet doors down and using liquid sander on everything.

Bored by all the talking yet? I am, let's look at some pictures...

A reminder of what we were working with:

I worked on the bottom cabinets and the doors:

While Bill worked on the top:

Then I decided to sand and paint the bureau they left to use as a side board in the living room:

And we were ready to re-hang the cabinet doors in no time!

We bought brushed nickel handles and hinges to coordinate with our soon to be stainless appliances (!!) and copper handles for the bureau since they won't be in the same room...

They were right (whoever "they" are)!! Painting the cabinets made a gigantic impact!! It really livened up the kitchen. Now all we need is to get all those old appliances out of there... more on that soon!

Very pretty! And I just can't understand why you want new appliances. Look at how cool and vintage that stove/microwave combo is!
